Course Descriptions

Creative Dance - Designed for pre-school aged children, this class will allow students to explore simple and enjoyable movement such as skipping, marching, galloping, and stretching. Children enjoy using props such as scarves, stuffed animals, and musical instruments to express themselves and facilitate learning. At this level, many students are being introduced to everyday concepts such as taking turns, listening to each other, and working as individuals and in groups. Class is taught mostly with classical ballet music.

Pre-Ballet - This level is designed specifically for five-year-olds to help make a smooth transition from the pre-school quality of Creative Dance to ballet. we will continue some of the same activities from Creative Dance but will add introductory ballet concepts. Students will learn a few French words from ballet vocabulary.

Level I - In this level students will begin to learn basic concepts of ballet technique such as turn out, proper alignment, and some positions of legs and arms. Some activities that they enjoyed in Creative Dance and Pre-ballet will continue such as skipping, use of props, and playing of instruments. Now they will begin to understand how music works with dance. Ballet vocabulary which is in French is introduced.

Level II - In this level students will begin to develop more ballet technique and less creative dance material. More positions are taught, ballet vocabulary is increased and barre work is introduced.

Level III - In this level students will begin to study ballet technique exclusively. The first half of class is spent working at the barre. The second half of class is for working in the centre and across the floor. Students will work on developing muscles carefully and safely to support their technique. The bulk of their ballet vocabulary will be taught at this time.

Level IV - In this level students will continue to study ballet technique with strong emphasis on understanding anatomical concepts and how to work best and most safely within their own bodies. The first half of the class will be spent working at the barre. The second half of the class is for working in the centre and across the floor. Pointe technique may be taught for the last few minutes of class if students are physically ready for it. Students will be expected to know ballet vocabulary and use it as communication.

Level V - In this level students will continue to study ballet technique with strong emphasis on understanding anatomical concepts and how to work best and most safely within their own bodies. The first half of the class will be spent working at the barre. Part of the second half of the class is for working in the centre and across the floor and the remaining time will be used for pointe technique. Students will be expected to know ballet vocabulary and use it as communication and picking up of material will be strongly emphasized.

Beginning/Intermediate Jazz - This class is designed for children who have never studied jazz before or have had only one year of training. Movement is energetic and lively set to popular upbeat music. Jazz is based on ballet principles so ballet class is recommended in addition to establish a strong foundation.

Intermediate/Advanced Jazz - This class is designed for older children who have had jazz training and teenagers whether they have had prior classes or not. Dancers can expect to work on many of the same exercises from Beginning Jazz but with more challenging concepts physically and mentally. Ballet class is still strongly encouraged in addition.

Family Yoga Class - This yoga class is geared to children, ages 5 and up, and their families. A space is created where families can connect with each other and their community. Families find support for a healthier lifestyle that will increase their physical strength, flexibility and concentration.

Advanced Beginner Adult Yoga - For beginners and advanced beginners who are looking to build strength, flexibility and peace of mind. This class includes a brief meditation and will flow through yoga poses focusing on the breath.
